Loving Our (Ukrainian) Neighbor

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, we’ve had the opportunity to reach out to Ukrainian and Russian students, as well as refugees. Given their history (Russian invasion in 1968 to crush the Prague Spring), this conflict has been felt deeply by Czechs, and there are signs of solidarity with Ukraine everywhere:

We’ve also been able to assist refugees: We both volunteered at the main train station in the early weeks of the conflict working the food tent set up for refugees, and we’ve had the opportunity to welcome two families into our home who needed short term shelter.

Here are some stats for you about the situation here:

  • The Czech Republic has so far granted 360,370 temporary protection visas to Ukrainian refugees fleeing from the war since its start on Feb. 24th.

  • Between 75 and 80 percent of the originally registered refugees are still staying in the Czech Republic.

As the war continues, there is a shift to meeting the longer term needs of refugees. Tomorrow we’ll share an exciting way Anna is going to be involved. Stay tuned!
